Shout out! to Dr. Dan Griffin

We’re proud to celebrate Dr. Dan Griffin, PGY-4 in the Medstar Georgetown University Hospital Orthopaedic Residency Program, whose research earned the prestigious Joseph E. Boyes Award for Best Resident or Fellow Presentation at the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) Annual Meeting.

Dr. Griffin, alongside his colleagues, led a project titled “A Modern Biomechanical Assessment of Functional Elbow Motion Using Motion Capture Software.” The study builds on a landmark 1981 Mayo Clinic study by re-evaluating how much elbow movement people use in everyday life, this time using advanced, modern motion-capture technology.

The team’s research also reflects how daily tasks have evolved, examining everything from working at a computer to movements that are inclusive of all genders. Their findings offer valuable insight into how our understanding of joint motion should evolve with modern lifestyles and technology.

Dr. Griffin’s project was supported by collaboration and mentorship from faculty members, Dr. Michael Kessler, Chief of Hand Surgery for the MedStar Orthopaedic Institute in the Washington DC region and the D’Aniello Vice Chair of Education and Dr. Aviram Giladi, Research Director for The Curtis National Hand Center and Scientific Director for Orthopedics at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. Dr. Griffin’s work and national-level recognition represent the best in collaboration between both campuses throughout MedStar Health.

Congratulations again to Dr. Griffin on this outstanding achievement and national recognition for advancing the science of hand and upper-extremity surgery – we could not be prouder to have you represent MedStar Health & Georgetown University!
