We currently have five peer-selected System Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) positions open to our residents and fellows. The MedStar Health System GMEC offers an opportunity for resident or fellow physicians to serve as voting members on the oversight body for GME activities throughout the MedStar GME system. Membership is determined by peer nomination and voting each summer, with consideration given to hospitals that currently have no resident members on the System GMEC. The next call for nominations will be in August.
Additionally, we have two System Physician Leadership Council (PLC) positions, and the interview process will begin in June. This PLC offers a unique opportunity for resident or fellow physician members to participate in high-level clinical and administrative decision-making and policy-setting that shape the direction and standards of clinical care across the MedStar Health system.
In addition to these more formal opportunities to share input that will shape decisions, our feedback form is always available and completely anonymous, unless you choose to share your name. Our leadership team regularly reviews and responds to submissions.

We’ve heard from our residents and fellows that access to a gym is important. We are actively working with partners at the hospital to identify potential options for a 24/7 gym for residents and fellows, and we will continue to share updates as we make progress.
We know that access, affordability, portability, healthy options, and convenience remain priorities for our residents and fellows.
At MWHC, we continue to promote healthier options such as salads and made-to-order sushi. If you notice calorie counts or food information that seems inaccurate, please let us know so we can address it.
At MGUH, we are working with vendors to expand food options and make it easier for residents to use their dining dollars at the pop-up station. Improvements are ongoing, and more updates are coming.
Residents and fellows are also invited to drop in and participate in the Food Advisory Group, which meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 5 p.m. This is a space to share what is working, what is not, and what you would like to see more of.
We are actively exploring a more consistent approach to educational benefits across MedStar GME programs and sites. We will continue to share updates as we make progress.
We take these concerns seriously. We are working with internal teams and external partners to improve traffic flow and safety around hospital campuses, including areas outside hospital property. This work remains a priority, and we will continue to share updates.
We’re focusing on keeping options fresh, seasonal, and well-stocked. We’re also happy to have the new food options on the fifth floor of Verstandig at MGUH.
We are also exploring the addition of new food options to MGUH, as well as improving accessibility to other food choices at other sites.
On the fourth Monday of each month, we host a Food Advisory Group meeting where residents and fellows can share ideas for new menu items, suggest locations that need more options, and provide feedback on areas that frequently run out of food, particularly on nights and weekends, and more!
We’ve expanded our menu to include more kosher choices and are adding additional halal options. Our food vendor is researching further halal selections to better meet everyone’s needs.
Please continue to share with us any dietary restrictions, meal preferences, religious preferences, or cultural preferences – this will allow us to be as inclusive as possible, which benefits the entire GME team, as well as our patients and visitors.
We understand the value of health and wellness. Many locations have small, easily accessible gyms. As we regularly review the benefits we can offer our residents and fellows, we’re working with our partners to explore the feasibility of dedicated gym resources within or in close proximity to MGUH.
This area is fenced off because temporary generators are currently in that space. We’re engaging facilities leaders to evaluate options to make the area more walkable and easier to navigate.
It’s now a multipurpose area used for FIT testing, flu clinics, EPIC training, meetings, and storage.
Planning is underway to convert it into a new clinical area.
A shuttle was considered a few years ago, but there wasn’t enough demand. We’ll keep an eye on this and revisit the idea soon if interest has grown.

Yes! Our IT/IS partners recommend using the web-based Microsoft suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, etc.) for most routine purposes, which is available with your “@medstar” email address. We want education stipends to be fair and flexible so that they can cover technology, such as laptops. We’re working toward more consistent policies across all hospitals.
At MGUH, we will launch a Space Survey soon to see what spaces you have been assigned and better understand your needs. This will help us determine if you need more sleep space, workspace, space for belongings, or any other accommodations.

During the Town Hall, we announced an opening on the Physician Leadership Council (PLC), the system-wide committee of physicians under the leadership of Dr. Steve Evans, Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs & Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for MedStar Health. The PLC includes all CMOs across the system, as well as other senior leaders integral to care delivery, and its members provide oversight and direction on matters that are of critical importance to all our physicians and providers across the health system, spanning from Quality & Safety to medical operations to clinical IT, and more.
The PLC is seeking a resident or fellow to fill an open position beginning in September 2025. The requirements for the position are listed below. Applicants must be in good academic standing and have proven leadership capabilities.
PLC resident members are required to attend all scheduled PLC meetings, which are held in person every other month in Columbia, Maryland. Other requirements include regular contributions to GME Town Halls and other system-wide initiatives across our GME consortium. View the full list here.

We partnered with facilities to offer two new locations for safe bicycle storage at MWHC. Please ask your program director if you need help finding these storage areas. These were prioritized as a direct result of feedback heard from our residents, so thank you!
Yes. In this benefit year, health insurance costs increased for everyone across the System. With that came a new co-pay of $15 for the MedStar in-network providers for therapy services, which is the same co-pay for primary care. Our goal is to keep these costs as affordable as possible. Yes. The key aspect of the updated GME Paid Time Off (PTO) policy that the System GMEC recently approved is that we are increasing the minimum time available to four (4) weeks of paid leave per academic year across all our GME programs systemwide. This ensures a consistent minimum baseline for all MedStar Health residents and fellows. We encourage you to reach out to your program director or any of our GME leaders with any questions that you may have about this positive iteration in the GME PTO policy.
This is a continuous area of focus and discussion for MedStar Health-Georgetown University GME, as well as other medical training sponsoring institutions across the country. We adhere to ACGME requirements to ensure all our trainees are ready to be independent practitioners in your discipline with an appropriate balance of service and education. However, if this scale is unbalanced in any way, please reach out to your program director or GME leadership.
Pharmacy leadership at the System level is aware of the feedback about the pharmacy availability at Georgetown. The primary issue affecting our ability to keep the pharmacy open on Sundays is staffing challenges, and we are working to extend the hours as soon as feasible.

Although co-pays have gone up this year for all associates, we remain dedicated to ensuring access to high-quality care while working to keep costs as low as possible for all our associates.

Yes! Making sure our residents and fellows have access to healthy and diverse food options is a priority. We are consistently looking at how to improve our food service. We are happy to share that later this month, a 24/7, self-service market designed for your convenience will open at MGUH. In addition, we invite you to attend a monthly meeting with Chris DeRocco, MedStar’s Vice President for Food and Nutrition Services. These meetings are held on the fourth Monday of the month, at 5 PM on Teams. All residents and fellows are invited.
The symposium scientific review committee received nearly double the number of submissions for the 2024 symposium this year compared to past years. Given the space restrictions, we limited accepted abstracts to ~300, representing a variety of disciplines and academic rigor. In the future, the committee will strive to provide evaluation feedback on proposals that aren’t accepted to further the learning process.

Currently, residents are assigned the same provider bundle as other direct care providers within MedStar Health. A group from across MedStar Health has been formed to redesign and optimize the central line training process, and updates will be shared on this topic in the coming months.
Our goal is to ensure that we can provide personalized, flexible benefits for our residents and fellows. We are aware that food and travel costs continue to increase and work to be responsive to these changes to remain competitive in our market and meet the needs of our teams.
For the safety of patients, visitors, and associates, manual and motor-powered vehicles are not allowed inside the hospital. This includes electric scooters, bicycles, and electric bikes.
Bike racks are available at the Bus Circle and Emergency Department entrances, the Main (Blue) parking garage, and the Physicians Office Building (Yellow) parking garage. Residents and fellows should secure manual and motor-powered vehicles with a lock.
We encourage residents and fellows to report incidents of theft to the Office of Public Safety and GME.
The GME office has been doing daily walkthroughs of all call rooms at MWHC. While computers and printers in every lounge are functioning, there is a known issue with ports on the computers in the call rooms, which are actively being replaced by colleagues from our IT team. For any call room, computer/printer or lounge concerns, please e-mail WHC-GMEoffice@medstar.net, call 202-877-7227, or stop by the front desk.
Environmental Services will not clean call rooms if there are personal belongings in the room or if it looks like the room is being actively used. We encourage you to put your personal belongings in the lockers that are immediately outside of the call rooms. There will be more food options for MedStar Health associates, patients, and families at MGUH in the coming months. We recognize that this is a significant issue, and we are working diligently to improve the available options and reducing barriers to food on the hospital campus. There is currently food distributed to the house staff lounge on 3CCC on a routine basis and we are considering expanding distributions to the resident workrooms on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors. We are also considering turning some of the resident workrooms at MGUH into combined lounge/work rooms with tables, couches, and a fridge stocked with food. Please stay tuned for more updates soon.
Yes, that unit is undergoing a full renovation, and it will be converted to offices and meeting space, nursing space, and resident call rooms and workspaces. The resident call rooms should be operational in early March.
There are glass-enclosed team workrooms on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floor that are open to anyone, including all of our residents. In addition, there are three rooms defined as resident-only workrooms on the far corner of the ICUs on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors. These resident-only workrooms are open to all house staff.
The Physician Concierge Program is a benefit unique to GME. You can e-mail LafayetteConcierge@medstar.net and mention you are a MedStar Health resident or fellow to be connected with a Primary Care Provider (PCP). We will bring the feedback that we need additional access to specialist appointments back to the workgroup who helped set up the Physician Concierge Program, and we will develop a solution.
