MedStar Health clinical faculty and residents and fellows are the primary teachers and mentors for medical students at Georgetown University School of Medicine. More than 850 MedStar Health providers hold faculty appointments at Georgetown University, where 80 percent of medical student teaching is delivered by residents and fellows and clinical training is conducted mainly at MedStar Health sites. Approximately 25 percent of the School of Medicine’s graduates are matched into MedStar Health residencies and fellowships.
In addition, there are more than 400 MedStar Health physicians engaged in research, publishing more than 1,000 academic papers a year, creating meaningful collaborations in teaching, research, and academic service.

Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) is an internationally recognized academic medical center with a three-part mission of research, teaching, and patient care (through MedStar Health).
GUMC includes:
- The School of Medicine and the School of Nursing & Health Studies, both nationally ranked
- Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, designated as a comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute
- The Biomedical Graduate Research Organization (BGRO), which accounts for the majority of externally funded research at GUMC, including a Clinical Translation and Science Award from the National Institutes of Health
