Global Health Partnerships

MedStar Health-Georgetown University Graduate Medical Education has entered into partnerships with institutions around the globe to enhance opportunities for medical education and research. These relationships have intentionally been established with longitudinal goals for both partners in mind, and with reciprocity as a key component. MedStar Health-Georgetown University GME welcomes medical learners from our partner institutions who collaborate with our resident physicians and fellows in global rotations, education, and research. Strong faculty relationships across borders elevate partnership opportunities and support future growth.

For residents and fellows interested in additional global health training, please see the Global Health Equity Track page for more information.

Global Health Rotations

Both domestic and international sites are available.  Experienced faculty continuously evaluate global health rotations for ethical engagement, educational opportunity, safety, and supervision. Residents will actively observe, collaborate in research, and/or participate in clinical medicine internationally within the same scope as they do in the United States and with the appropriate level of supervision. Active observation and research collaboration is strongly preferred internationally, with select clinical practice opportunities requiring local licensing/approval by the partner country’s Ministry of Health.

Emergency medical and evacuation insurance will be mandatory for international sites and is recommended through one of the following: AXA Assistance USA, HTH Worldwide, and Seven Corners. See International Rotation application for details.

At this time, funding for international rotations is determined by the resident or fellow’s department leadership. There is no fee for international rotations, however travel, housing, and licensing costs are the responsibility of the traveler if funding is not available through their department.

Please email healthequity.academics@medstar.net with questions regarding the application process or to connect you with Domestic partner opportunities.

International rotation requests should be submitted via application link below 3 months prior to requested travel. New site proposals must have a plan for longitudinality and reciprocity, will require application up to 6 months in advance, and are subject to approvalOne-time experiences may be granted for Fellowship audition rotations only. Once the application is received, you will be contacted regarding next steps, which will vary depending on the site.
