MedStar System Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC)
Description: The MedStar Health System GMEC provides an opportunity for resident or fellow physician members to serve as a voting member of the oversight body for GME activities across the MedStar system. Membership is based on peer selection through a nomination and voting process, with consideration given to hospitals that presently have no resident membership on the System GMEC.
Participants Needed: As the ACGME accreditation committee of record for the MedStar Health GME Consortium, at least two resident/fellow positions are required on the System GMEC. The committee currently includes 5 resident/fellow members. For FY25, the System GMEC will be recruiting 3 new members.
Commitment: Meetings occur monthly on the first Thursday (afternoon). The term of appointment is 2 years thus applicants must have at least 2 years of residency/fellowship remaining.
MedStar Health Physician Leadership Council (PLC)
Description: The MedStar Health PLC, formerly known as the Vice Presidents for Medical Affairs or VPMA Council, provides a unique opportunity for resident or fellow physician members to engage in high-level clinical and administrative decision and policy making that set the direction and standards for clinical care delivery throughout the MedStar Health system.
Participants Needed: There are two resident positions on the PLC. A call for nominations occurs as vacant positions become available.
Commitment: Meetings occur monthly on the first Thursday (morning). The term of appointment is 2 years thus applicants must have at least 2 years of residency/fellowship remaining.
MedStar Health System Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee
Description: The MedStar Health System P&T provides an opportunity for resident or fellow physician members to serve as a member of the committee that provides oversight and guidance to MedStar practitioners related to medication management. The Committee’s mission is to optimize care in the of use medications as it relates to clinical efficacy, safety, operational efficiency, legal and regulatory mandates, financial performance, and technology.
The P&T Subcommittees include:
- Medication Safety Subcommittee
- Antimicrobial Stewardship Subcommittee
- Pharmacogenomics Subcommittee
- Opioid Stewardship Subcommittee
- Nutrition Subcommittee
- Clinical Oncology Subcommittee
- Anticoagulation Stewardship Subcommittee

Participants Needed: One resident/fellow member for the System committee + one resident/fellow member for each of the seven Subcommittees.
Commitment: Monthly meetings for System committee + quarterly meetings for Subcommittees; plus ad hoc time for a Committee or Subcommittee related project for all members.
MedStar Health Institutional Review Board (IRB) Committee
MedStar Institutional Review Board (IRB) Description: The MedStar Health Research Institute IRB has developed openings for two MedStar resident/fellow members with an “Educational Appointment” to the IRB. This is a great opportunity to demystify the human subjects protection process, particularly for those interested in an academic career.
Responsibilities include:
- Being familiar with the basic principles and mission of the IRB
- Review and determine appropriateness of new research protocols and continuations
- Serve as a resource to fellow house staff for all matters related to the IRB
- Complete the CITI “IRB Members, Ethicists, and Ethics/IRB Administrators” Modules
Participants Needed: 2 resident/fellow members. The term of appointment is for one academic-year appointment with the ability to apply for a 2nd year. Preference will be given to applicants with at least 2 years of residency/fellowship remaining. There are currently no openings for FY25.
Commitment:
- Attend one meeting/month on the 1st or 3rd Tuesday from 3:30 – 5:30pm
- Present at the IRB meeting quarterly with the mentorship of a full board member
MedStar Health Wellness/Wellbeing Committees
The MedStar Health Wellness/Wellbeing Committees provide an opportunity for resident or fellow physician members to serve as members of various system or local committees that provide guidance and coordinate wellness and wellbeing initiatives.
System Wellbeing Initiative Steering Committee | GME Subcommittee
Description: A subcommittee of the core wellbeing team dedicated to GME wellbeing. This committee helps plan GME-specific wellbeing initiatives.
Participants Needed: 2 residents and 1 fellow (additional members welcome)
Commitment: Bimonthly (every other month) 1-hour meeting.
This committee is currently on an extended hiatus.
Local Entity Wellness Committees
Description: Multidisciplinary committees at local hospitals working on local wellness initiatives. These committees oversee the wellbeing initiatives for all associates. The committee is multidisciplinary and includes physician and nurse wellness champions, HR and communication leadership, and reports directly to the hospital president. Participants Needed: 1 resident at relevant sites: MGUH, MWHC, MNRH, MFSMC.
Commitment: A quarterly hour-long meeting monthly or bi-monthly (varies by location).
Local (Hospital) Graduate Medical Education Committees (GMECs)
Description: The local (Hospital-based) GMECs provide an opportunity for resident or fellow physician members to serve as a member of the oversight body for GME activities at each of our primary GME sites:
- MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (MGUH) Local GMEC
- MedStar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC) & MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital (MNRH) Local GMEC
- MedStar Baltimore Hospitals Local GMEC
Participants Needed:
- MGUH Local GMEC: 3-4 peer-selected resident/fellow members
- MWHC & MNRH Local GMEC: 4-5 peer-selected resident/fellow members
- MedStar Baltimore Local GMEC: 3-4 resident/fellow members
Commitment:
- MGUH Local GMEC: Meets quarterly + monthly meetings with Chief Residents/ADIO
- MWHC & MNRH Local GMEC: 1 hour monthly + ad hoc time for any projects
- MedStar Baltimore Local GMEC: Quarterly meetings
MedStar Academic Affairs Working Group on Racial Justice (WGRJ)
Description: In partnership with Georgetown University Medical Center, the MedStar Health Academic Affairs WGRJ was created to address the negative impact of systemic racism in our MedStar Health academic community. The focus audience of this working group is MedStar Health residents, fellows, and teaching faculty. This effort consists of a Steering Committee and six Subcommittees, or working groups, focused on the development and implementation of sustainable positive change in our clinical learning environments.
The six working groups (subcommittees) include:
- Wellbeing & Responsiveness Subcommittee
- Recruitment Retention & Success of URM Residents & Fellows Subcommittee
- Recruitment Retention & Success of URM Teaching Faculty Subcommittee
- Racial Justice Curriculum Reform & Evaluation Subcommittee

- Research & Education in Health Disparities & Health Equity Subcommittee
Housestaff Diversity Council
Participants Needed: 1 upper-level residents to serve on the Steering Committee; multiple participants for each of the six subcommittees.
Commitment: monthly meetings for the six subcommittees; biweekly meetings for participants of the steering committee
