I am currently the Chief Resident of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at MedStar Health. As a native of southern Virginia, I attended college in Charlottesville and then medical school in Chicago. I am also currently the medical director for a free clinic initiative that takes care of patients in Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia.
“The health of our patients starts with their well-being at home, their relationships with the people around them, and their place in society. Even before they have stepped foot into a doctor’s office, either they or the people around them have made judgments and decisions that affect both who they are and their ability to seek care they may need in the future. We have an imperative as healthcare providers to not only help our patients facing disease – addressing our biases along the way – but also to preemptively address the social, economic, and societal factors that impact patient health.”
At the same time, we should be actively mentoring younger generations to become tomorrow’s doctors so that more patients will see providers like themselves. The time is now to take action.
