The Graduate Medical Education (GME) Clinician Educator Track is a longitudinal two-year program designed for residents and fellows who are interested in developing expertise in clinical education and pursuing careers as clinician educators. Through a blended curriculum that combines didactic instruction, experiential learning, mentorship, and scholarly activity, participants gain the foundational skills needed to become effective, evidence-based teachers.
The program emphasizes practical clinical teaching strategies and the application of educational theory to real-world learning environments. Participants engage in quarterly evening seminars, medical education journal, directly observed teaching experiences, and self-paced online lectures accompanied by reflective exercises. Examples of core topics include bedside and procedural teaching, simulation-based education, curriculum development, learner assessment, feedback, mastery learning, self-directed learning, universal design for learning, professionalism, and fostering respect and belonging in the clinical learning environment.
A central component of the track is the completion of a mentored scholarly capstone project in curriculum development, assessment and evaluation, or medical education research. Participants work closely with a self-selected faculty mentor to develop a project suitable for presentation at a regional or national conference and/or publication in academic literature.
Beyond developing teaching expertise, the program aims to cultivate a community of clinician educators across specialties, encouraging interdepartmental collaboration, scholarly inquiry, and a shared commitment to excellence in education. By the end of the program, participants will have developed the skills to critically evaluate education research, apply evidence-based teaching practices, and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of medical education within their programs and beyond.
To earn a certificate at the end of the 2-year program, participants must attend at least 80% of in-person sessions and complete all required coursework, including the capstone project.

The GME Clinician Educator Track is open to residents and fellows from all MedStar training programs and specialties who are interested in careers in clinical education. Applicants must be in good academic standing and have at least two years of training remaining within a MedStar-sponsored program at the time the track begins. Residents may apply during their PGY-1 year, but participants must be at the PGY-2 level or higher at the start of the program. Applicants will be required to submit an application along with their curriculum vitae and a written letter of support from their residency or fellowship program director.
Applications open each fall for participation beginning the following academic year. Applicants will be notified following the review process. The annual ‘Call for Applications’ and instructions will be announced through MedStar Health Academics email communications.

Laura Malmut, MD, MEd
Course Director
Dr. Laura Malmut is a dedicated leader in medical education. She serves as Medical Student Clerkship Director and Residency Core Faculty for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at MedStar Health and Georgetown University. Dr. Malmut earned her Master of Education (M.Ed.) in the Health Professions from Johns Hopkins University and completed the MedStar Teaching Scholars Program, where she also received Association of American Medical Colleges certificates in Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) and Medical Education Research (MERC). As a physiatrist, Dr. Malmut is particularly passionate about advancing education in the care of individuals with disabilities. Clinically, she specializes in inpatient rehabilitation, helping patients recover from medically complex hospitalizations with a focus on optimizing function, independence, and quality of life.
